I HAD A MASTERCLASS WITH THE LAURA MERCIER TEAM ON HOW TO CONTOUR FOR PALE SKIN, USING THEIR NEW FLAWLESS CONTOUR KIT.

Contour. A word that fills me with absolute fear. “I’m surely far too pale for a contour?” she says, as visions of very non-Kardashian-far-too-dark-for-me stripes adorn my cheeks. Uh no. Not for me. I’ve avoided the darn thing as hard as I could, but when the opportunity arose for me to have a one to one lesson at the Laura Mercier counter, I thought – well, i’d better start learning really. What helped me through this was the notion that Laura Mercier are very well known for their flawless, natural skin enhancing products and general ethos, so I knew from the minute I agreed that I wouldn’t be left having to walk the streets of Knightsbridge with tiger stripes all over my face.
I met the lovely Sasha Ghodstinat, Makeup Artist, at the Harrods Laura Mercier counter – the place where this palette launches exclusively later this month – and she very quickly put me at ease, cleansing and prepping my skin for the contour lesson to begin. Okay not i’m not going to lie, I definitely shot a look of fear as she opened up the new Flawless Contour Palette, but Sasha very quickly showed me how to make it work for pale skin.
So, without further ado, here are the amazing pieces of wisdom that Sasha imparted onto me that day, so you too can contour Kimmy K style, even if you’re a pale English rose like me!

– Do one cheek at a time. Why? The contour begins to set, even powder, and you don’t want an uneven face.
– Use a small foundation brush to apply the cream contour shades. Pat off the excess cream on the back of your hand before you apply so it’s not so heavy handed.
– Blend upward. Why? This creates a far more defined, natural look – eliminating those stripes!
– Blend using a brush or fingers, and don’t rush this step. Blend for as long as it takes.
– Start from the middle of your ear, and head to the corner of your mouth. Stop halfway down your cheek.
– Take down either side of your nose bridge, and round the top of your nostrils.
– Use your concealer or something like the Laura Mercier Secret Camoflage underneath where you have contoured on your cheek to make it more defined and add a ‘pop’ to the look.
– Additionally, blend a little in the top of your eye socket to add a smokier look to existing eyeshadow, or to define eyes on days without eyeshadow.
– Use highlighter above the contour lines on the cheek, under eyebrow, down bridge of nose and tip of nose. Also on the chin under the mouth, and above the mouth on the cupids bow.

Sasha also said that if you’re heading out at night, you could tweak the look with a bit of the darker contour to make it stand out more in the darkened club, and show up better in photographs. Just remember to blend and blend and blend some more as you really want it to look natural. Blend upward was pretty key, don’t blend it downward. She said if it was summer or a party night you could also set it with a bit of clear finish powder over the top to keep the look defined and in place.
Ahh I learned so much from Sasha and also realised that it was time to not be afraid of the contour kit, and to not avoid it in the store, as dark as it looks – you can make it work for you. I saw this first hand and I left feeling happy with my look, as you can see it above. The Laura Mercier Kit turned out to be dead useful for newbies like me, and even comes with a little secret compartment with pull out cheat sheets incase you forget any tips along the line.
The Laura Mercier Flawless Contour Palette launches exclusively in Harrods in January 2015, but nationwide in February. Will you be picking it up? It will cost just Β£35, which I think is so reasonable for the amount of product you get! What do you think about contouring and this new palette?
